Algunos ejercicios con tiempos verbales

 Dear Tutor,

I am coming to Brighton College from Singapore, where I was a student for ten years. I did already take examinations in Singapore in English, Biology, Computer and Maths. My highest score is for Computer: I got grade A.

When I was a student in Singapore I also have a part-time job in a shop. My uncle owns a supermarket and so I helped him in the evenings. I used to worked there four nights a week and I think this was very good experience for me.

At the weekends, I usually played volleyball with friends or, if the weather's bad, we have been to the theatre, which is very popular in Singapore. Because of my part-time job, I also did spend a lot of time studying at the weekend.

I didn’t go to many other places. My father took me to Thailand once. Three weeks after we had returned he also went to Malaysia and took the whole family.

This is a brief description of my background.

Me encuentro con este simple examen y con que fallo las respuestas. He puesto las respuestas en negrita.
Ahora se trata de justificar las respuestas y ver si en otra ocasión le saco más partido a esto.
I have come to Brighton College. No usamos el past simple porque ha venido y sigue aquí, es decir, ha tenido consecuencias en el presente y el futuro.
I have already taken examinations. Es estudiante, y no se descarta que no tenga mas exámenes en el futuro, de ahí la elección del present perfect en vez del simple past.
My highest score was. Una vez en el pasado, past simple.
I also had a part-time job in a shop. Past simple. No ocurre ahora y no es previsible ocurra en el futuro.
I worked / used to work there four nights a week. Nos da las dos opciones, aunque esto del used to work, directamente es trampa. No avisan previamente de que puedes usarlo. used to work va de maravilla, y si no, pasado simple. Ya no trabaja ahí ni se supone lo haga en el futuro. Ni siquiera tiene implicaciones en el presente.
if the weather was bad. Lo ponían en presente y con apóstrofe. A ver si se nos pasaba desapercibido. Le corresponde past simple, por ser un hecho puntual en el pasado.
we went / used to go to the theatre,  Al igual que antes, used to go, va muy bién. Past simple también.
I haven't been to many other places. Ha estado en muchos otros lugares y no se descarta que una estudiante tan internacional no vaya estar en otros tantos. Así que past perfect al canto. Si el pasado tiene implicaciones en el presente y/o implicaciones en el futuro, past perfect.
 we returned. Acción terminada, sin implicaciones en el presente y sin que se pueda reproducir en el futuro, past simple.
